Today's InstaLove post goes out to local Henna artist, Zoë Vallée, who has done a couple of pop-ups at our store this summer. Zoë has been practicing the art of Henna for a couple of months and the girl is crazy talented- every design she creates is done free-hand!
For people who are unfamiliar, Henna is actually a flowering plant and the dye that we know and use today for temporary body art and hair dying is prepared from the plant. Henna has actually been used since antiquity to dye skin, hair and fingernails, as well as fabrics including silk, wool and leather.

This one is mine! |
I love the idea of Henna because it's like a tattoo without the permanent commitment, so if I'm thinking about getting some new ink I just get it done with Henna first. It's nice to be able to wear around the design for a few weeks to make sure that I really love it before I take the permanent plunge. Obviously, this is not the reason most people get Henna done, most people get Henna done (in Western culture anyway) because it looks beautiful, it's something different to do and it's a lot of fun.
An interesting fact that Zoë told me recently is that Henna dye will always reach its darkest pigment on your palms because the skin is the thinnest there. The further away from the palm the thicker your skin gets and the less pigmented your body art will be.
