One of fav Model Citizens photos, shot by the amazing Brian Ricks (www.brianricks.com). Anna, Leona and Miki are so adorable in this fantastic photo. We shot this photo even before Model Citizens opened and it still makes me smile every time I see it.

Gilded Opulence has taken over designer wear collections this Fall 2010 season. There is a great mix w
ith baroque rock and roll, the richness of sensual and deep colours, world influences and sharp structure to make fantasy-style evening looks.
Some styles more wearable than others, the resurgence of richness and luxury is surely an influence of the post recession climate. Often, fashion takes its cues from socio-political events and this style surely has something to say.
Strong women, severe angles and boldness of colour really make this trend. Check out collections such as Balmin, John Galliano, Lanvin, Missoni, the wonderful Alexander McQueen and Etro to see this style. Check out the images above to get a feel for the look! Featured above are designers from their Fall 2010 collections: Anna Sui, Alexander McQueen, Pucci, and Balmain.
To Get The Look
This look is so rooted in vintage! Look for 80's sequined jackets, embrace the sharp shoulders- even should pads! Long upholstery printed coats and heavy
rich fabrics (think wine, emerald, gold) and then play with sequins and studs to get the rock chic. These styles were present in every era and piecing them together is half the fun.
Check out the photo of Skye, shot at Model Citizens by Adam Penney. We had a bit of fun with an 80's sequined jacket to play on this kind of look. You don't need to go head first in the style, you can take quick moments of it to make it more wearable.

I have always enjoyed the creative fever that comes with Anna Sui. All the pieces that we get into Model Citizens by AS are designed with a creative gal in mind. The consistent element though is the quality of fabric and workmanship. Check out one of my favourite Anna Sui blouses below (shown at the Downtown Fashion Show in ST. John's)
So Anna Sui's Fall 2010 collection. Oh let me count the reasons of why I have fallen in love! From the crafty whimsical nature of the graphics and design mixed with the ski bunny we love. Throw in a little 70's sweetheart whipped with a touch of Art Nouveau and you have this collection! The result of these combinations is a fantastic vintage inspired (but NOT retro) is so purely Anna Sui.
To Get The Look:
Never be afraid to mix patterns! Take graphic prints and mix with patterns. Layering is also key to this look- and a fearless attitude. Start with tights and move up. Notice that this show was done with all flat boots- totally Pret-a-Porter. Top off the look with accessories from fingerless gloves, fur hats, fur vert and boleros and scarves. Never be afraid of oversized things when trying to achieve this kind of vibe- it makes it look effortless and so fashion forward.

For a vintage buyer, this Louis Vuitton collection was very special. Not only did it throw back to eras gone by, it WENT back
there. Beautifully tailored cir
cle skirts dominated this collection and the young, fresh and scrubbed clean look of the 1950's was reflected in every piece.
There was definitely another part of this collection that intrigued me. Curvy models, with breasts and hips filled out all of these beautiful pieces. Marc Jacobs has really taken those womanly features and made them part of Haute Couture again. Not that he is the first to do such a thing but from my point of view, he did more than just make a statement- he celebrated women and their features as a big part of this collection- and in turn, it made the collection truly
Louis Vuitton is bringing the classic, luxe that they are known for (but don't always stick to). This was a different interpretation of the Mad Men-esque 1950's revival but with a cute, innocent Parisian bounce. Freshly scrubbed make-up and vintage car coats, suits (matched or not), long leather gloves and low heels with large bows all made this collection perfectly innocent and fresh.
Although the real star of this show was the revival of the "Speedy". What would an LV show be about if it wasn't about the bags! Designed in the 1930's, the Speedy came back adorned with sequins, smothered in guipure lace over satin, or woven in metallic thread and done up in fox.
To Get the Look
Just come down to your favourite vintage store and joyfully play in the 1950's wear. Also, nail down a pair of long, elbow length leather gloves, et volia!

Strike up the band and go to the football game- varsity wear is in high demand. Nostalgic of Malt Shops and 50's bop, the 50's and 60's cardigans, football jackets, scarves are hot hot hot!
To modernize, take the varsity sweater and pair with a really slim jean, white low v-neck tee and sky high booties or pumps. Finish off the look with an over the shoulder vintage 90's mini satchel. For misters, play up the geek chic with your horn rimmed glasses, cardigans and ties with slim pants and oxfords. It really is a wonderful throw-back to the 1950's.

This is such a special "vintage" photo for me. This is my Mom's family from a small northern village, La Tabatiere, Quebec in the 1960's. My Mom, Celina is the smallest girl, in the middle. It is like looking in a mirror- we look a lot alike! After I saw this photo, I got such happy tears in my eyes. This totally made my day when it was sent to me by family friend and I am just brimming with happiness every time I look at it. This is my very proud Vintage Photo of the Day today.

This Fall, we saw a few different looks make waves throughout the fashion shows in Milan, London, Paris and New York. Marchesa chose to pursue red carpet looks that showed craftsmanship folded in with some serious rock and roll.
This line created by Georgina Chapman and Keren Craig was inspired by dancer and courtesan Lola Montez. They brought in the jewel tones in those beauty bright reds- with was so appropriate for the inspiration for the work, but also highlights how brights are making a huge impact this season. There is a spectacular return to color- bright and almost summery- this Fall. This vivid hues usually appearing in accessories such as vibrant bags (think Hermes Birkin in electric hues), YSL bright, honkin platforms and overall return to whimsicality in the accessory. Also, notice a touch of the men's wear trend sneakin in.
Marchesa made a huge impact on my choices for formal wear this holiday season. This collection feature playful gowns, with a uptown maturity and sultry opulence that speaks to the much coveted younger, ready to wear audience. Reminiscent of 1940's, 70's and 80's, Marchesa delivered in this collections.
I use this photo a lot because I love the whole package. Nicole looks fantastic, her hair and pose are just fantastic. The outfit is so hip right now- 90's black skinny jeans, 90's belt and 1950's white poly top with bow. This look is topped off with vintage Ferragamos with corresponding bow. The photo is saucy and evokes a feeling of impish delight! Enjoy!

After the recession dust (somewhat) cleared and most find themselves bargain hunting, the reemergence of luxury in fashion was inevitable. There is a subtle return to quality and classic style, like cashmere car coats, long leather gloves, high leather riding boots and shades of beige, camel, crème and brown. This look is all uptown class.
Check out classic lines such as MaxMara, Fendi, and the master of High London look, Burberry. This look is so in this Fall and evokes such a classic, indulgent feel in both the wearer and all who pass by!

Skye is channeling her inner 80's pop princess and current risque indie look. Both vintage, those pastel 80's biking spandex and vintage 90's tight lace blouse. We had so much fun shooting this photo as it was a risque for us, but the result was one of my favourites!

Model Citizens is carrying a new, terrific and innovative, Canadian T-shirt line called "JOY APPAREL". Joy Apparel is an online T-shirt company and the website features hundreds of hand-drawn portraits of people from all over the world. This is an awesome new concept in which people from all over the world are wearing one another on their hearts with 5% of the profits from each sale going to charity. All shirts are made from certified organic cotton and bamboo and are manufactured in Canada
Each face comes printed over the heart and when you wear your Joy T-shirt, you are encouraged to think about that person and how your everyday actions can affect others and the world we live in! Each T-shirt comes with a little bio telling you about the person on your heart and after purchasing a shirt you may then submit a photo of your own visage via the website which will be drawn and posted on JoyTshirt.com for others to wear.
What a wonderful idea to have everyday people, regardless or race, gender, age, religion, disability or sexual orientation wearing one another. You wear someone you don’t know and then someone on the other side of the world wears you, thus creating a global network of people from all over the world. We are SO proud to carrying this amazing product here at Model Citizens.

With this look, you need to think grandma-like but with sequins! Bold colors paired together in combos and mixed patterns that as a whole work wonderfully. This look is a Betsy Johnson Vivienne Westwood explosion.
This look brings in vintage nicely and is so much fun. Think slouchy men’s wear with opposing patterns and colors. Throw some military here and there and you have yourself the look! OR Bold colored tights paired with opposing colored mod dresses and peep toe platforms!
Rejoice friends- sequined tops mixed with bold pencil skirts, coloured tights and mod coats can all be worn together!
To get this look, consult the Model Citizens staff to achieve these great looks but know that you have to let yourself go in the style and embody those fashion visionaries to rock it- proper thing, don't you think?
