Photo of the Day-Neutrals
Shot by Brian Ricks, we wanted to feature the idea of luxe neutrals. Miki fantastic in the caramel colours. Don't be afraid of Neutrals on neutrals, you don't always need a pop of colour.

Smoking Cigarettes
Of course this is just a fashion reference. You know, those slim black pants that taper and end just above the ankle, just one major staple in the wardrobes of those such as Miss Hepburn and Sandra Dee? Stovepipes, Peg Legs, Pencil Pants... all of these nicknames for the infamous Cigarette pant.
These pants have made constant comebacks since their first appearance in the 50's. Most recently in 2006 when the Gap launched an ad featuring a digital Hepburn dancing around to Back in Black. From the looks of fashion forecasts into 2012, the pant is not ready to die yet.
We have been introducing the Cigarette pant into the lives of many here at Model Citizens. The cut of the pant is much more flattering to most then the average skinny pant. Breaking up the line of the leg slightly above ankle can both lengthen shorter legs, and make the foot appear much more elegant. These pants also come in several different fits to flatter. I am currently on the lookout for my own perfect pair. This pant offers a more sturdy (and warmer!) alternative to the ankle length legging. Dressy with heels, practical for boots and sweet with flats, these pants look fantastic with longer tunics, and jackets, shirts tucked in, and shirts untucked! Talk about versatility. Known for her fine tailoring and minimalist designs, the styles above feature Stella McCartney's fierce use of the Cigarette pant in her Spring 2011 collection and again in her Autumn 2011 line!
I'm going to go freeze in my ankle length leggings now. Happy Thursday!

Buying Trips and Wedding Dresses, OH MY!
Hello Model Citizens,
Happy to be back at my sweet little abode after a huge buying trip for Model Citizens. We had a great trip and have all kinds of goodies being stocked as we speak. I am thrilled though to be back and getting at it.
This trip was also eventful because I FINALLY committed to a wedding dress. This was a wild experience. Even though I deal with clothes everyday and pay close attention to aesthetic all the time, when it comes to myself, I am not good. I guess it might be because I see such an incredible volume of clothes, I forget what my own style is. And that is just the beginning of my problem everyday, let alone buying a wedding dress.
But I found it and it wasn't quite the "aha!" moment I thought it was going to be but it was a gradual, warm "I am in LOVE" moment. We have a few things to do with it when it arrives (like a giant applique) but I am so happy that I found it. My sisters, Blaire and Meagan and My Aunt Jess really helped me narrow things down to get what I really wanted, even though I had no idea what that was.
So, clothes, clothes clothes. Model Citizens is blocked and we are ready to tackle these winter months and move on into the cold. So, as Joni Mitchell says, "Come in from the Cold" and visit us today to see all new stuff.

Fabrics + Friday Night = Fab.
Well, not just on Friday, any day! Happy Friday, fashionistas and fans! Today my whole inspiration is coming from this bright blue suede skirt. Straight out of the late 80's/ early 90's, this piece. Paired with this vintage lace long sleeve ( that is making a MAJOR come back) this outfit is dynamite. The two paired together exhibit only one way either can be worn. Both of these pieces would look fantastic about 50 ways each. Together they show just how well two extremely different fabrics can work together, like I said in my "matching" blog last week, do not fear playing with color combos. Here's a new rule- do not fear fabric combos! With great color, fabrics, and a vintage vibe this outfit is the definition of a big deal without really being a big deal.
I'm hittin the road again folks. Have a good weekend, play with some color and do not fear rocking that fabulous 80's piece, no matter who ca-rayzay the fabric!

Just Too Cool- MC's Photo of the day
Those Leopard Print over-the-knee boots, man those may have been my favourite thing ever. Nicole kick ass in this photo and Steve Pike is pretty good arm candy. Featuring St. John's own, Fred's Records in the background.

You are Making me Blush
Blush and Champagne are definitely in and out every season and we see designers trying to embrace its effortless chic almost every season. With colours like blush, champagne, mushroom, grey, slate and cream they really embody a very NYC vibe. Carefree and linear, chic and structured.
How I love these soft vintage tones, with the exception of Lea Michelle's dress, not a fan of pink but she wears it well. Sandra Bullock, no matter what anyone else says, look stunning. I think that dress is so old world vintage, yet so chic and understated. Not sure if I would have chosen such intense features with it but her dress is fab.
Scarlett, the dress kicks serious ass. I love it! The hair though, takes away from the bohemian qualities of the gown. Meagan fox, meh but the colour is so elegant.
This is a trend that will last coming out of this award season and trickle into the mainstream. It is a brutal colour to try and pull off with various skin tones but I think it is up to the wearer to just simply embrace it.
Minimalism Has Hit The Red Carpet
Finally, a minimalistic look gets its due on the red carpet!
Award seasons (along with weddings and proms for all of us normal people) are often littered with bling, poof and volume. I am SO happy to see the Minimalistic look really make a statement this past Golden Globes. I love the cap sleeves of the peach dress and I think the matte, flatness of the fabric, mixed with the beautiful cuts of these dresses is where it is at.
Inevitably, after these award shows, you see a surge in the retail market based on the three of four prevailing styles and my fashion intuition tells me that this is one of those looks. And emerald green. And sleeves (told you so!) But that is for another blog post...
These past few weeks, I have been on the hunt for a wedding dress that suits a minimalist taste. This is proving difficult, but I will keep you all in the loop about my progress. Hopefully, event designers take notice of this great style and effortlessness.

Life in Color~
Hello and Happy Friday to all you lovely, lovely MC blog readers! I am pretty pumped to start contributing to the store's blog! Blogging in this business makes an incredible amount of sense. Every single day I work with clothing, and every single day I work with people. The two do not always get along. Dressing for some people is like a 6th sense. For others, they really have to work...and that's fine! You can have a lot of fun figuring out exactly what does and doesn't work for you when it comes to every element of clothing- color, fit, fabrics, patterns, and the oodles of other design elements. Embrace the faux pas!
I have decided to use my blog time to reach every eye who wants (or needs!) a response to some of the everyday questions, dilemmas, successes, and failures that we face every single day here at MC. SO, here goes my first crack at 'er...i'll try and keep it short and sweet (like Chelsey baha. Sorry).
Today's thoughts are on matching. What does it mean when we say "that doesn't match" ? Think about it. While everybody has their own preferences and styles, it is a fun fact that if you're wearing a bright pink top- you don't HAVE to wear a plain black or brown bottoms or some other (BORING..ha) neutral.
My friends always give me a hard time because "i studied color theory". However, it's true! Putting color on color can indeed induce not so pleasant 80's flashbacks, but it can also achieve that "Oh I just threw it on" look that most of us crave. To achieve perfection and avoid crazy town, try and keep colors in the same families. If you're feeling like you're up for a challenge, look for a contrasting color for an accent. YES you can incorporate another color as an accent...without involving any black dress pants! Amazing.
I understand this can be a lot to absorb. To demonstrate this style concept, here's my mannequin, we will call her Kate. First pic, plain dress in navy and forest green. Another pic with an aqua cardy (same family as the green and navy). The middle picture demonstrates using accents colors- the yellow belt? It just works.
So that's today's thought. Hopefully I have inspired the need to add more color to your life. I promise you'll be happy and maybe even a little dance-y.
I'm gonna go rock out to Florence and the Machine. You go have a fabulous weekend, and remember- Style is in you, not on you.
Much love,
ML xx

This is my absolute favorite photo that we have ever done. Nicole is wearing vintage Jordache jeans, vintage blouse with mondo bow and vintage Ferregamos, complete with bows. Shot in front of Breakwater Books (local publisher), Adam Penney really did a great job of this shot.

Christmas may be over but we have fabulous things at MC. We are restocking daily, getting new lines and bringing your favourite lines all winter. We have tons of We Love Colours tights, great, easy tops and bottoms, superb jeans and rockin dresses- all for less with the same great service that Model Citizens is proud to provide.
Jewelry is still coming in for winter and yes, Valentines Day! We just received yet another Jon Klar order full of his famous "anodized aluminum" earrings. Of course, the lovely Canadian-made Foxy Originals line is still available and right now we are awaiting a new shipment from The Weekend Store- always a favourite. During the sometimes dreary winter months, we will be brightening up the days by introducing many new jewelry lines here at MC. Just wait until we are finished with our own Model Citizens hair accessories and clothing line this spring!

Anna Sui Spring 2011- Prairie Oyster
Anna Sui Spring 2011
So, it is no secret that I love Anna Sui. I always try and have Anna Sui available at Model Citizens because her work is so quirky, yet wearable. She really brings a theme forward and follows it to the letter throughout her collections and the Spring 2011 is no different.
Now, I am bias as I have always been partial to 1960's/early 70's Bohemian, mid-west country vibe with my own personal style, but here, Anna Sui brings the great "all american patch-work quilt" to this collection as well (like in her Fall 2010) with fluidity and style. I love the Mid-West style going on here and I think the theme is so current in the resurgence of alt country and bluegrass music and alternative, shoulder to the plow lifestyles.
Flowing patterned Maxi Dresses, Jean on Jean, petite floral blouses and sweeping helm lines make this collection fun and flowing yet mature and feminine. Accessories abound in this collection with feathers, headpieces, natural elements (wood, bone, glass) in the jewelry and notice, flat boots!
As always, Anna Sui is consistently bringing beautiful and wearable collections that embrace themes that are timely and trailblazing. MC is a big fan and loves getting new and old Anna Sui as sh continues to create lively and classic styles that always return!
