Spring is coming...I promise!

So, here at MC we love seeing what vintage is inspiring today's fashion and every season, we see new trends that reflect yesterdays style. This Spring (2012) there is so much 1960's mod happening and we like it! From Valentino's more reserved boho/60's girlish vibe (middle photos) to Victoria Beckham's full on Mod swingin'(top header), there is lots to love this season. Marc Jacobs (2nd in on the bottom left) keeps the colour blocking going with minimalistic cuts and Alice and Olivia (bottom right) go full on vintage in pastel collection.

If you are going for this look, take the cues from what is going on- this isn't Austin Powers. Be careful not to make it look too costume-like and keep accessories to a minim. I like that Valentino kept the hair and makeup fresh and youthful. Big and high buns in your hair are sticking around and beachy, wind blown waves (au natural). When doing the cat eye, use a really high quality liquid liner to get the precise wing and keep the lips nude and skin peachy and youthful.

Model Citizens Top 5: Golden Globes Men's Edition!

The Golden Globes have kicked off award season and if there can be one thing learned from this year's red carpet its that men's formalwear looks best sleek, simple and next to a beautiful woman. The majority of men this year stuck to the classic black suit or tuxedo so here's 5 men who kept it basic but still managed to catch the eye.

Gerard Butler

It would seem that, since playing Leonidas, Gerard Butler loves to expose his abdomen. This time he's showing off a well fitting, low slung vest. Butler nailed the perfect mixture of casual and formal, juxtaposing a classic tuxedo with scruff and long, wild hair. It worked out.

Brad Pitt

The first thing you'll probably notice about this picture is that Angelina Jolie has an stunning dress. This is definitely true but upon closer examination you'll notice a few things her hubby. First off, he's got a cane and as far as I'm concerned men need to use more canes. I mean when else can a man get away with walking down the road jauntily spinning a cane? It's the Golden Globes! Aside from that particular accessory, Pitt looks excellent with a differently textured jacket and vest combo as well as long hair. Pitt's always been one to rock the long locks and he's still keeping it up, 15 years later.

Kevin McHale

I'm going to be honest, I have no idea who Kevin McHale is nor if he's actually 14 like this picture would suggest. One thing I do know is that I love a good velvet jacket and this Kevin McHale character is making it look good. Bonus points to Kevdog for the polka dot bow tie which works with his slightly more casual choice of attire. The great thing about wearing a velvet jacket is that you can get away with slightly more playful accessories, as opposed to the much more rigid and traditional black tuxedos.

Adam Levine

Adam Levine loves big things! Actually this is merely conjecture but his getup at the Golden Globes was definitely oversize. From the bow tie to the lapels to the slightly frosted tips, Adam Levine woke up in the morning and decided that regular sizes just weren't going to do it for him. You know what? It works. He was in danger of looking goofy with a bow tie that sort of looks like Eeyore's ears and lapels as wide as a serving platter but he somehow pulled it off. I think it's the facial structure.

Zachary Levi

Zachary Levi, who coincidentally was also awarded the "Did that usher stumble onto the red carpet?" prize actually injected some well needed colour unto the red carpet. His bluish/charcoal tuxedo was a breath of fresh air in a sea of black. Hats off (and a 5$ tip) to Levi for showing everyone that although black is a sure bet, there are other colors that can look debonair without pushing the limit.

Golden Globes Best Dressed List

The award for best dressed goes to........

Charlize Theron! The Young Adult looked youthful, natural and daring all at once in this Dior dress. This was my absolute favourite of the night. She always looks good but this dress was so different from a lot of the repetition on the red carpet and so beautiful and soft that she stood out from everyone.

The close runner up to Charlize is the stunning Diane Aragon from Glee. I gotta say, I dislike Glee but I love this dress. Designer Giles created a beautiful, intricate dress and I believe the design is achieved by laser cutting the swan pattern. She looks stunning from head to toe and really stole the show from a lot of the old faithfuls on the red carpet.

Jessica Biel looks stunning is this romantic gown. I couldn't find the designer, but it deserves a spot on this list. Lace, lace and more lace, this is a stunner. I love when actresses feel confident and sexy enough to rock a long sleeve. This was breezy and serious all at once and she just looked beautifula nd ethereal.

The exact opposite to Jessica Biel is Lea Michelle's Marchesa number. Holy shitballs! What a stunning dress with incredible craftsmanship. Reminiscent of Halle Berry's famous frock the year she won for Monsterball, it was amped up by the metallic rock and roll vibe. I don't like Lea Michelle, I think she is a pain but her stylist deserves huge props for the last few awards shows.

Another opposing design is the 90's simplicity and metallic dress that Nicole Richie wore. Despite her alien hair, this dress rocked. It was simple yet a stunner. Nice to see a totally different shape on the carpet that flattered her petite frame.

Honorable Mentions:

Everyone is going to have Angelina Jolie on their best dressed list but it didn't make me crazy, really. Maybe I was turned off when Ryan Seacrest (who is amazing, by the way- the shit that guy puts up with) asked her if she was nervous about the US premier of her film, In the Land of Milk and Honey,
and she responded something to the effect of "I am nervous about the rape and starvation in Bosnia.... what a ridiculous response! Jesus. That knocked her from the top 5, for shizzle.

Reese Witherspoon: I am so glad she went away from cute, 50's vibe for this one. What a hot dress and showed that she can rock it with the best of them. I don't love the whole trumpet gown in general, but she rocked this Zac Posen number.

Shailene Woodley: I have no idea what she does or even how old she is, but her dress is dynamite

Kelly Osbourne: her hair ruined this awesome dress for me. Why!>!?!

Laura Dern: She won the GG and she won on the red carpet! This dress is a stunner. She would have been in the top 5 if she had done more hair-wise to amp it up.

So, I love vintage Pendleton blazers. They are fitted, designed to fit beautifully and are always fantastic plaids. If you have been following Anthropologie lately, Pendleton has made resurgence in a big way. Their blazers, capes, oversized sweaters and jackets are something to behold and it is hard to believe that it is all still made in Oregon. They have focused on the Navajo prints rather than the plaids but it is so good to see a true american company come back in such a fantastic way. It is expensive new, this cape retails for approximately 400.00. Our vintage pendleton blazers retail for 40.00-65.00

That being said, Pendleton is fairly sought after in the vintage world, as the quality is head and shoulders above a lot of the vintage wools of similar eras. Luxury Fibre Feature: Cashmere

Cashmere is my favourite. Hands-down worth every cent. Not only is it the softest feeling fabric, it is durable and luxurious to look at and to touch. At Model Citizens, we have almost eliminated our merino wool sweaters by replacing them with cashmere exclusively. My obsession has lead to MC carrying some of the best brands and varied selection (not to mention a fraction of the price) that St. John's has to offer. I even have PJs that are cashmere. We carry it all year round and I wear my cashmere in every season. In honour of the coveted cashmere, we have decided to dedicate a blog post to explain the who, what and why of cashmere and how to look after your very own cashmere goodies!

Characteristics

Cashmere is characterized by its fine, soft fibers. It provides anatural light-weight insulationwithout bulk. The original undyed or natural colors of cashmere wool are variousshades of grey, brown and white.

Why is cashmere coveted? Run your hand across a fine merino woolsweater. Now, try it with cashmere. There's no comparison. Cashmere is softer,and its featherweight fiber is warmer than wool without adding bulk. The supplyof imported cashmere to the U.S. ballooned almost 500% from 1997 to 2005, to14.7 million pieces, as demand also soared. Prices remain relatively high,starting at about $100 for a good sweater. But in the world of luxury gifts,it's hard to beat cashmere's delight-per-dollar value.

Is the number of plies in a cashmere garment like a thread count --the more the better? The yarn in a two-ply sweater is two strands twistedtogether to compensate for uneven or weak spots in the individual strands,resulting in a stronger sweater. Additional plies add weight and warmth, butthey aren't really a measure of quality. Generally, single-ply cashmere won'tbe as durable. But high-end makers pull off lightweight, one-ply pieces withhigh-quality yarn and good construction.

Source of the fiber

Cashmere wool fiberfor clothing and other textile articles is obtained from the neck region ofCashmere and other goats. Cashmere goats produce a double fleece that consists of afine, soft undercoat or underdown of hair mingled with a straighter and muchcoarser outer coating of hair called guard hair. For the fineunderdown to be sold and processed further, it must be de-haired. De-hairing isa mechanical process that separates the coarse hairs from the fine hair. Afterde-hairing, the resulting "cashmere" is ready to be dyed andconverted into yarn, fabrics and garments.

Care instructions

Cashmere is a natural product. Air out yourcashmere garment after wearing it, resting it for one or two days between uses.Cashmere can be machine-washed on a cold cycle using a suitable liquiddetergent. Lay your cashmere garment flat and allow it to dry naturally.Pilling is a normal occurrence on cashmere and is caused by the cashmere fibresrubbing together during wear. Bobbles can be removed easily using a pilling comb.

One Outfit, Two ways: Keeping Warm While Keeping it Chic

This is such a fabulous outfit for any time of the year. Cropped cigarette pants have a place in every season these days and Christmas is no exception. We have a cropped, structured Marc Jacobs top and fantastic Burberry cropped pants.

Fearing the chill? You can always wear your warm clothes and boots there, and switch into your awesome shoes when you get to the party. Cropped pants are designed to show off your legs and shoes. Takes two seconds and it is easier than matching a cocktail outfit with mukluks.

Too Cold? Putting a great jacket over any tank brings warmth and a great structured look to the outfit. This stark white Coach jacket is the perfect addition to this outfit. The hat is not half bad either.. kitty is optional.

Metallics: How to Rock the Christmas Season

It seems every Christmas season, retail store see it fit to pack their stores with glitz and sequins. For years I always asked, "Why?!" It has nothing to do with trends or fashion runways- people want a bit of sparkle during the holiday season, so the retail stores oblige.

At Model Citizens, there are different levels of sequins. There are sequins for those who want vintage 80's sparkle (almost on the edge of irony), those who want jewel tone tops to match with a bit of bling and those who go all out sparkle.

In this photo, Model Citizens wants to show how to take a big and bold top and make it work so you will stand out but not stick out (if you know what I mean). On its own, this JCREW metallic top is wild and hard to envision as an outfit. Think of metallics as a part of the neutral family. We paired this top with a skinny pair of JBrand black jeans and a pair of velvet pumps. The skinny belt brings it all together and makes an difficult, seemingly Christmas top chic and understated.

A Bit of Family History..

I posted this last year and I wanted to give it a bit more attention to tell our readers about how special this photograph is. This is my Mom's (Celina) family at Christmas time in Northern Quebec, in a small village called, "La Tabatiere". My mom is the small girl with the big brown eyes in the middle standing up. She must have been maybe 5 years old in this photo, since the photo is from 1962.

It is amazing when you look at a photo and it really speaks to you. This photo embodies the holiday season- family, togetherness, humility and everything so important for the holidays. I almost feel like I can't totally put it into words, but since I am starting my own family these days (yes, I am pregnant!) seeing this picture makes me so excited to have a family of my own and appreciative of the amazing upbringing that she had, and my dad had and subsquently passed on to us.

Jack and the Manger retells the story of Jesus’s birth as if it were a Newfoundland folktale. It’s all seen through the eyes of Jack, the hero of many a story, who befriends a young couple on their walk to Bethlehem. There’s a bit of ‘angel talk’, some gravel pit camping, an edge-of-your-seat birth drama, and the low-down on how Caesar Augustus’s ‘count-and-tax plan’ brought them all together. It’s a down-to-earth version of a heavenly tale.

Gentle, playful and very funny, Jack and the Manger is the second in an on-going series of Jack tales, combining the talents of Andy Jones, one of Newfoundland's finest storytellers and actors, and Darka Erdelji, one of its most distinctive artists. It was a Christmas sensation in St. John’s when it was first published, and is sure to please even the most Grinch-like of readers.

Erdelji, whose illustrations for The Queen of Paradise's Garden were widely praised, captures the sly wit, intelligence and great heartedness of Jones's tale in her pictures once again.Jack and the Manger is a fine Christmas tale for young and old alike.

Dog's Breakfast

A quirky and delectable collection of 23 letterpress-printed recipe cards featuring the recipes of Newfoundland-based printers, artists, writers, musicians and foodies.

The collection, a collaborative project from the Book Arts Association of Newfoundland and Labrador, comes in a letterpress-printed envelope designed and printed by John Haney and Duncan Major. The work was done at walking bird press, Running the Goat Press and Daubers Press.

In 2008, just before Christmas, CBC radio carried the story of a bird that somehow had found its way onto a plane from Newfoundland that was headed to Fort McMurray, Alberta. Dave Paddon's hilarious recitation offers a take on what kind of welcome that bird may have met when the plane landed.

The Christmas Turr has fast become a local favourite; Paddon regularly performs it at storytelling and ballad sessions in St. John’s, and was invited to present it as part of the 2009 St. John’s Storytelling Festival.

The original linocut illustrations for the poem are by Duncan Major.

The Same Dress- Two Very Different Looks

One of the most common conundrums that our clients struggle over is holiday wear. It is the idea of buying a cocktail dress for office parties, christmas dinners and family events and feeling like you can only wear it once.

Not so we say!

Take this sparkle sequinned dress- fairly standard holiday wear. A great way to get more mileage out of this kind of dress is to pair a great blazer with it, fun and flirty accessories and voila!- it is more of a "night out" outfit than a NYE dress!

Mens Fashion: Navigating the Holidays

There is nothing more classic than a peacoat. Steve is wearing a vintage peacoat, Burberry trousers and Frye motorcycle boots. His tie is YSL and his dress shirt is also Burberry. This is a great formal look for those events that pop up during the holidays that some of us dread. Dressing up shouldn't be a headache so keep it simple and remember: less is more..

As much as I know most men hate the idea of formal dressing, it always comes up during the holidays. In order to keep this look clean and streamlined, make sure you wear things with minimal fussy details- go for flat front pants (no pleats!), loosen the tie as soon as possible and roll up those sleeves. My one biggest suggestion is investing in a good pair of boots that can be passed off as dressy shoes and worn casually. You can also do an oxford dress shoe and wear those casually after.

This is such a good look for guys this holiday season- not too fussy but really put together. Here we have a vintafe tweed vest, Prada dress shirt, Burberry straight leg jeans and Frye boots. Good for going to a show downtown and dinner with the folks. No tie need but a skinny black tie would work very well.

Susan Lee Stephen, originally from Yellowknife, NWT, has called Newfoundland home for the past twelve years. She has experiemented in many different mediums and techniques over the years, most recently textiles and welding, but her ongoing interest in jewellery has won out. With a myriad of jewellery workshops and a completed certificate in jewellery arts from the Haliburton School of The Arts, Susan now works full time from her home jewellery studio in St. John's.

Susan's jewellery is primarily silver, with elements of copper, bronze, brass and semi-precious stones incorporated to add colour, texture and dimension. Inspiration for her pieces comes from the ideas of transition and change. Silhouetted imagery suggests shadows and moments frozen in time. Often, unexpected elements are hidden in the designs - a bird in the tree branches, or a nest behind bullrushes - evidence of the constant ebb and flow of the natural world.

This 40's inspired dress is so effortlessly chic. The colour palette is right on for Fall/Winter. Luxurious and that pattern has so much depth.

This is how you wear black beautifully. That effortless oversized vibe is still present and it really is such an interesting combo of tough glam rock and roll and uptown chic

I am such a huge fan of the all over patterns this Fall. D&G, Rodarte, Erdeme- lines are really rockin' the patterns. This is also spot on with the vintage throwbacks that happened this Fall across eras.

This colour palette really does it for me- so 70's curatins. The cut is just so refined. I also like the heavier shoe used throughout the show- I am so sick of seeing glittery platforms.

Today's fashion trends seem to be more and more transitional from season- think nude and neutral color palettes, lace touches, and the fantastic androgynous aspects that we have especially been seeing through pants and footwear. All of these trends seem to be on the horizon for F/W 2011. I was feeling a wee bored this summer because while I have been digging where we are at with fashion, I wanted something new.

With winter (quickly!) approaching we fear lack of color. While deep jewel tones and neutrals did indeed trot the runways, I was ultra pleased to see that we do NOT have to lock up our corals and tomato reds! Sky blue and brilliant purple were mixed and matched for some intense color blocking, while radiant fuchsias and cobalts paired beautifully with rich, luxe browns.

Much of the same can be said for fabrics. Silks are not limited to summer days. While the runways sported silk one piece pantsuits and dresses, fewer things look more fabulous then an unexpected pairing of fabrics. Leather + Silk + Wool = Delicious.

So when you walk in our doors, you will find a vast array of colors, fabrics and designers, and pieces from exciting times in fashion. Experiment with them! And if you're feeling like you'd like to try something different from you normal, come chat with us! We are always equipped and excited to play dress up with you, and help you find a look you love.

This photo is of my husband, Sam on his first day of school in St. Mary's, Ontario. I was looking through our Model Citizens pictures for a topic to write about and I came across this adorable photo and it got me thinking. Sam is dressed in exactly what MC's guys like to wear, so I decided to use it as my inspiration to put together a inspiration board for fall men's fashion.

Plaid Shirt

First off, Sam is rocking the Plaid Work Shirt- a mainstay in mens fashion these days.

The plaid shirt really is a masculine staple, and is the one thing that men really own. They emulate an outdoorsy, gruff, pine-smelling man. The pearl snaps add to the shirt by giving it that slight cowboy swagger. I am not totally sure if we will ever see then end of plaid for guys, I think it is one of those vintage mainstays.

Dark Jeans

Well, it wouldn't be a man blog post without talking jeans and we are completely throwing our support behind Canada's own Naked and Famous Jeans. A great raw, dark denim look without the silly, prefab wear and holes that come with mainstream jeans. Selvedge denim is a great choice for guys looking ot get more out of their jeans. Stiff at first, but with wear will in directly to your body.

Recipe for a Cold Day: Stew!

My sister-in-law (who just had a sweet baby girl) is a chef in St. John's and she helped us prepare this great recipe for our wedding favours. I thought that since today is an awfully rainy, cold and damp day, that a stew might be the pick me up that y'all need. Feel free to replace the goat with lamb or beef, and please note that you should put in 2/3 cup of Guiness, not 23 cups.

Anyone who knows me, knows I love to cook (and eat) just as much as I love vintage clothes.

There is nothing in the world more satisfying than coming home, cracking a bottle of wine and cooking with your honey. In the fall, after the BBQ season has worn out its welcome and there has been far too many cold salads in your diet- digging into the harvest veggies and cooking piping hot masterpieces is so satisfying. Eating in at sundown with the woodstove going- nothing better in the whole world.

I thought I would start sharing great recipes with all you fantastic Model Citizens over the next little while, I think is a great additional to our lil' blog. As it is harvest time in Newfoundland, I was to remind everyone about the St. John's Farmers Market http://stjohnsfarmersmarket.org/ - this is the time for those great harvest veggies!

In true Chelsey fashion, lets start with Dessert!

Burstin' Berry Crumble

Streusel Topping:

1 1/4 cup all purpose flour

1/4 cup light brown sugar

1/4 cup granulated white sugar

1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup cold unsalted butter, cut into pieces

Berry Filling:

6 cups fresh berries (blackberries, raspberries, blueberries, strawberries)

1/4 - 1/3 cup granulated white sugar

1 teaspoon grated lemon or orange zest

2 tablespoons cornstarch

Preheat oven to 375 degrees F and place rack in the center of the oven. Butter a 9 inch deep dish pie plate or an 8 x 8 x 3 inch baking dish- glass or pottery works best!

Topping: Place the flour, sugars, cinnamon, and salt in a food processor and process until combined. Add the butter and process until the mixture is crumbly (looks like coarse meal) and there are no large pieces of butter visible. (This can also be done in a large bowl with a pastry blender, two knives or your fingertips.)

Filling: Place berries in a large bowl and toss with the sugar, lemon zest, and cornstarch. Transfer the fruit to your baking dish and sprinkle the streusel topping evenly over the fruit.

Bake for approximately 30 -35 minutes or until the topping is crisp, golden brown and the fruit juices are just beginning to bubble. Remove from oven and place on on a wire rack to cool for about 30 minutes before serving.

Serve with softly whipped cream, single pouring cream, or vanilla ice cream

I have put this stunning photo up on the blog before, but I felt the need to showcase it again. There is something about this awesome white sequinned jacket that I just can't get enough of. Skye looks amazing in this ensemble and it is so effortlessly chic and grunge inspired. That vintage tee was the softest shirt in the planet, so perfectly heathered- great for this outfit!

These sequinned jackets are not easy to find in the vintage world but I nab them whenever I can!

One of the best vintage must-haves of the season is the vintage prep school blazer. This RL vintage 90's double breasted navy blazer rocks and can be used in so many ways. Here, we have it paired with a sequined dress and awesome bowler-style hat but you can rock the blazer in so many ways. Go totally preppy with a blouse and jeans or throw a band tee and flared pants and you have a awesome everyday outfit that stands out. Go full on nautical and pair with trousers and a horizontal striped shirt (navy or red)

This spring, I found on of the most challenging trends was the mixing of patterns. In every magazine, they made it look so effortless- hence the appeal. We nailed it with this awesome vintage Marni floral blouse and this club monaco striped skirt. The military boots were a fun addition to up the edgy in the outfit. Kerri just positively adorable in this shot and I think it really shows how to bring those multiple patterns into one look. Enjoy!

Jil Sander Fall Collection 2011

Jil Sander's Fall 2011 collection was one of my absolute favourites this season. Despite its more obvious references to the 1950's, the cuts still remain (true to Jil Sander) minimalist and modern.
The collection really had two distinct 1950's influences: Ladies ski ads and operatic wear.

The Skiwear was definitely reminiscent of 50' vintage adverts, but also a bit of the 80's in the slouchy nature of some of the sweaters. The tailored sweaters we stunning and actually touched on the tailored prep/workwear of the early 2000's combined with the menswear aesthetic that is everywear this season. Also, we saw the minimalist boxy sweater pop up here, which, in my opinion, is a must have for Fall.

The operatic wear in this collection really spoke to a vintage and a modernists taste (like my own)- complete with melodrama and a cinematic quality. Saying that, it was very 1950's in less obvious ways- the collection came of guarded, a modesty that was absolutely intentional and reminiscent of that era for women. Despite the chosen hues of big bright and bold, it still came off as a tailored, pensive representation.

This collection was more casual than others of this brand calibre but it was still innovative, thoughtful and forward thinking.

Channeling....The Virgin Suicides

Nicole is wearing a beauty vintage sheer babydoll dress that we all swooned over when it came in. It immediately reminded me of the Virgin Suicides (circa 1999). Check out a few still below:

The movie, directed by Sofia Coppola, tells the story of the five Lisbon sisters who are growing up in the suburbs during the 1970s. A group of boys try to piece together the Lisbon sisters’ story and attempt to learn about the mystique surrounding them. Fashion-wise, it has been such an inspiration for us at Model Citizens. Wispy, floaty and eerie, the 70's inspired southern styles are timeless and are angelic. The film is full of ethereal backlight and effortless otherworldly muted palettes and delicate floral patterns.

Hola amigos. Hope everyone's been having a splendid summer! St. John's is kind of wet today, but I think if we all unite together and think positively of the sun, we can change this weather (yes, I read The Secret).

However, the weather has not slowed down the amount of tourists popping around town. This week I have had the pleasure of meeting happy faces from New York City, Texas, Vancouver, Ohio, Taiwan, and Tazmania, to name a few. Chatting with people and hearing what brings them to our little home is one of the biggest perks of working this awesome job.

Our most recent batch of NYC duds, or as we like to call it "Chelsey Genius", is moving faster then I can count! But no worries. There's lots more where that's come from- remember, we change things up just about every day!

Oh, hello! Here's a small section of our dresses taken this am.

I wanted to blog today to tell anyone who's interested what is cooking here at Model Citizens. Gals- you will find frocks in citrus tones, both minimalist and frilly cuts. Floral patterns, big and small. Lots of tomato red. You will see some reoccurring trends from past seasons for Summer '11- lace, macrame, fabric embellishments and of course, the 70's/90's vibe. We have sweet denim, playsuits, flouncy skirts and great bags.

In the jewelry cabinet we have a brand new shipment of Harriet Grey (personal favorite), and Jon Klar that's fresh out of the box.

This is the outfit that I just styled on a mannequin- an easy, 40's inspired cotton dress with a bold 70's print in mustard and navy. The neck piece is a Harriet Grey beauty. Multiple strands of turquoise beads adds the perfect pop and this lovely vintage Longchamp leather makes this outfit the right amount of city chic.

Guys- I'm so pleased to say that we have the "Naked & Famous" denim line fully stocked for you! 3 cuts- Weird Guy, Slim Guy, Skinny. 3 colors. I LOVE seeing our boys happy, and happy they have been! We have brand new FluffyCo. graphic tee's, and plenty of snazzy and hip vintage.

Leather jackets are awesome. Joey Ramone knew this. General MacArthur knew this. James Dean knew this and so did Steve McQueen. Over their history they've come to symbolize authority and the counterculture alike. Adopted by the military, rock and roll and biking movements, leather jackets have become an important part of modern fashion, worn by men and women of all ages.

Leather jackets, like most items of clothing, have evolved greatly over time. Owing to an extensive military and later, biking history, different styles of leather jackets have been created to satisfy various utilitarian and protective needs by these two groups. These can be seen with the styles of the bomber, moto, rider, double rider, roadmaster and various other older jacket styles.

However, these jackets, the ones worn and popularized by the Ramones, Brando and others during the 60s and 70s for some reason or another got lost in the shuffle and, although maintaining popularity, began to be outsold by bland leather jackets designed with minimal, generous and frankly, boring cuts. This effect, which I'm going to call the "Danier effect" led to the increased popularity in the types of leather jackets. Danier and many other popular leather goods stores dropped many of the utilitarian, protective and stylish elements of leather jacket design in favor of neutral, spaciously cut boring jackets that appealed to aging baby boomers.

Although these now ubiquitous designs are certainly popular I feel that some of the older jacket designed with history and style in mind are a much more interesting choice. These jackets can be found and are made by a lot of different companies but they are normally fairly expensive. Which brings me to vintage leather. There are a lot of benefits to buying vintage leather. First and foremost is that leather jackets made in the 50s, 60s and 70s are almost guaranteed to be, although oftentimes heavily worn, made from much higher quality leather and hardware than modern leather jackets, especially those less than 600$. On top of that leather is one of the those materials that can benefit from age and develops a beautiful patina over time with wear and stress. Something that buying a brand new or pre-distressed leather jacket cannot provide. Add this to the fact that vintage leather jackets normally have very interesting designs and that leather itself is a tough, resilient material and buying vintage leather really makes a lot of sense.
